Beefcake

Today I interviewed with Microsoft and they did not ask me a single brainteaser or problem-solving question. So disappointing.

Thanks to my undiagnosed stomach ailment, Red Sox night games, and a recent series of job interviews, I have not had time to go to the gym very much this semester. In fact, if I had to guess I'd say I've gone to the gym twice since school started. As a result, I can feel myself getting lighter and heavier in all the wrong places (my arms and stomach, respectively).

My girlfriend probably wouldn't be too happy if I ballooned to 200 pounds, but more importantly my basketball skills are suffering as a result of my lack of exercise. The problem is that on Tuesdays and Thursdays I have class at night and on Mondays I play basketball in the mornings so I don't feel like working out at night. This leaves Wednesdays the weekend to lift, and I'm usually too lazy or busy on weekends.

I never used to be lazy about working out, but that was usually because I had people to work out with, so I felt obligated to go regularly. Now that I am only obligated to myself, I often allow myself to slack off. Does anyone have any good suggestions for keeping up a workout schedule on my own?

I recommend working out early. I started that up when I got to IBM and haven't stopped since. And not once has anybody tried to tempt me to skip to go eat breakfast or anything, so the distractions are fewer. And there seems to be a regular early crowd wherever you lift -- be it Bally's or Wash U.

Well, you could always try the architecture diet. It's a combination of high stress, no sleep, skipped meals, and occasional periods of fasting when you're out of change for the vending machine. That or you could just pick a time each week to go, and force yourself to always go at that time. Routines always help. And it's not like I'm going to break up with you if you hit 200 pounds or something, anyway. So enjoy your laziness! It's always fun to be lazy.

You say that now, but we'll see what happens when I try to walk through your door and can't fit. I think I would break up with me if I weighed 200 pounds :-)

I find that just kicking myself in the ass works pretty well...the proble is that all of the sitting exercises are a little harder.
