A Geeky Post to Keep Up

Others have been posting geekily lately, so in order to maintain my status as a CS Tool I should probably make my own.

Awhile ago, I posted about crazy Don Knuth, the famous and quite eccentric CS celebrity. Well crazy Don is at it again.

For some reason, Mr. Knuth and his wife decided to, on a recent trip to Ohio, take a photograph of every diamond-shaped street sign they saw. They also measured the GPS coordinates of each sign and, so that others could be enlightened by this information, posted the results on his website.

Now go, and be dazzled by "Condo Entrance", "Deer Xing", and "Slow Hill" in all their glory.

Alright, I followed the link to Knuth's webpage and then browsed around a bit. Here's another bit of his wackiness: volume 4 of his epic "The Art of Computer Programming" (TAOCP) is going to be published as at least three separate volumes. The traditional among you are asking, "Why aren't those labeled as volumes 4, 5, and 6?" Only Knuth knows.

And then there is his eerie obsession with lower-case delta. Even certain crazy CS professors in our own department don't even hold a candle to wacky Don.

And he has that gigantic pipe organ in his house. Apparently, Don Knuth is really the Phantom of the Opera.

Then there are the Knuth-wannabees. Douglas Hofstadter gave a talk at U of I once, an hour long lecture on Helvetica "a".

What's so wrong about a gigantic pipe organ in your house? [a Knuth wannabee]

Ron, I still think you need to show up at his house with some sheet music and offer to play a duet.

Frankly, the helvetica "a" is an under-respected character. By far one of my favorites, along with the System font "Q". Check it out...it's really funny looking.
